Saint Martin: The Most Beautiful Coral Island
World most beautiful travel place Saint Martin Island which is located in the southern part of the Bangladesh and near of the Cox’s bazaar- teknaf. Its area is only 8 km2. There is a small adjoining island that is separated at high tide, called Chera Island. It is about 8 km west of the northwest coast of Myanmar, at the mouth of the Naf-River. The first settlement started just 250 years ago by some Arabian sailors who named the island ‘Zajira’. During British occupation the island was named St. Martin Island. The local names of the island are “Narical Gingira”, also spelled “Narikel Jinjira/Jinjera”, which means ‘Coconut Island’ in Bengali, and “Daruchini Dip”. It is the only Coral island in Bangladesh. It’s possible to walk around the island in a day because it measures only 8 sq km (3 sq mi), shrinking to about 5 sq km (2 sq mi) during high tide. It’s a clean and peaceful place without even a mosquito to disrupt your serenity.
Most of Island’s who live primary from fishing. Besides, the other staple crops are rice and coconut. Being very common in the island, algae are collected, then dried and finally exported to Myanmar. Between October and April, the fishermen from neighboring areas bring their caught fishes to the island’s temporary wholesale market. However exports of chicken, meat and other foods do come in from the mainland Bangladesh and Myanmar (Burma). As the centre and the south are mainly farmland and makeshift huts, most of the permanent structures are around the far north of the island. During the rainy season, because of the dangerous conditions on the Bay of Bengal, the inhabitants have no scope to go to the mainland (teknaf) and their life can become dangerous.
In this Island, you will find the beautiful Coral reef and long Coral beach and lots of coconut trees.
Chera- dwip is a part of St. Martins Island. It is divided during tides. The Tourist can go to amazing Chera dwip by local motor boat, tourist boat as well as two and half- hours walk from St. martin island. There is a small bush which is the only green part of it, enhancing the beauty of this island. The tourist should go to Chera dwip early morning and come back in after noon because people don’t live there.
Nijhum Island is a natural beauty of mangrove forests where you will find dears of specific species and monkeys. In winter season, A huge numbers of migrated birds come in this island which is enhancing the beauty of island. First of all, from Chittagong you will go to Hatia island by Motor boat or Ship and from there you can go to Nijhum Island by local motor boat. From Dhaka you can go Tomzuddion by launch from Sadarghat launch terminal. From there you can go to Nijhum Island by local motorboat.
Accommodation is very limited for the tourist in this island. You can take foods from local restaurants but be careful about the quality of foods. If you can take prior permission for forest department then you can stay in forest rest house in Nijhum Island. Another possibility for accommodation is in District Parishod Guest house. If you take the permission from Thana administration (TNO) of Hatia you can also stay in the District Parishod Guest house. For the adventure seekers Nijhum Island could be one of the greatest experience of journey and it will be a memorable enjoyment to stay and pass some days in this isolated Island.
The attractions’ at St. Martin’s Island are Sunrise and sunset, Coral, Sandy Beach, Moonlit Night, Walking through Island and Scuba Diving.
The climate of this island is influenced by the subtropical monsoonal climate. So, It is very important to know the traveling time. From November to February is the best time for traveling to St. Martin’s Island. This time the winds and the tides are staying clean.A tourist must keep his eyes on the forecast keenly between March and July because a cyclone can strike during these times.
There are many hotels and restaurants in St. Martin’s Island. You do not need to worry. In addition, hotels are available in Teknaf. You can find out easily by searching the web or you can get information from teknaf ghat. Booking of these hotels are also possible from Dhaka. All these three hotels are situated adjacent to Seashore. From these hotels lobby or veranda, you can enjoy the Sea.
The only way to reach St. Martin Island is water transportation (Boats and Ships) from Teknaf.
From 1989 to 2004, non-residential Bangladeshis and foreigners were the only people permitted on the island; however, this has changed and now residential Bangladeshis are allowed. St. Martin’s Island has become a popular tourist spot. In the past five years St. Martin’s visitor population has increased dramatically. While this situation has proven to be lucrative for the islanders, it is causing the natural beauty of the island to deteriorate.
